Empowering Patients and Promoting Awareness

Generic Multiple Myeloma Drugs in India

Cancer awareness is the key to early detection and better health-seeking behaviour. Aark Pharmaceuticals is dedicated to create awareness about cancer, offering assistance to both cancer patients and their families.

Medications for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow, vary depending on factors such as the stage of the disease, the patient’s overall health, and individual treatment goals. Here are some common medications used in the treatment of multiple myeloma:

Proteasome Inhibitors:
These drugs block the action of proteasomes, which are enzymes that break down proteins in cells. By inhibiting proteasomes, these medications can lead to the accumulation of proteins within myeloma cells, ultimately causing cell death. Examples include:

  • Bortezomib (Velcade)
  • Carfilzomib (Kyprolis)
  • Ixazomib (Ninlaro)

Immunomodulatory Drugs (IMiDs):

These drugs modulate the immune system and have anti-myeloma effects. They may work by enhancing the activity of immune cells or by directly affecting myeloma cells. Examples include:

  • Lenalidomide (Revlimid)
  • Pomalidomide (Pomalyst)

Monoclonal Antibodies:
Monoclonal antibodies are engineered to target specific proteins on myeloma cells, marking them for destruction by the immune system or directly attacking them. Examples include:

  • Daratumumab (Darzalex)
  • Elotuzumab (Empliciti)

Corticosteroids:

Steroids such as dexamethasone are often used in combination with other medications to enhance their effectiveness in treating multiple myeloma. They can help reduce inflammation and suppress the activity of myeloma cells.

Chemotherapy:
While less commonly used as initial treatment due to the availability of newer targeted therapies, traditional chemotherapy drugs may still be used in certain cases, especially in combination with other medications. Examples include:

  • Melphalan
  • Cyclophosphamide
  • Doxorubicin

Bone-Modifying Agents:
These medications help strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures associated with multiple myeloma. They may also have direct anti-myeloma effects. Examples include:

  1. Bisphosphonates (e.g., zoledronic acid, pamidronate)
  2. Denosumab (Xgeva, Prolia)

Stem Cell Transplantation:
High-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell transplantation may be considered for eligible patients, especially those who are younger and in good overall health.

These medications are often used in combination regimens, and treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. It’s important for patients to discuss their treatment options thoroughly with their healthcare team to understand the potential benefits, risks, and side effects of each medication.
